September 28, 2016 Friedrich Launches VRP, a 'Game Changer' for the Industry

San Antonio, TX (September 28, 2016) – Friedrich Air Conditioning Co., a leading U.S.-based manufacturer of air conditioners and other home environment products, has unveiled a cutting edge new solution for the hospitality and multi-unit housing industries with the launch of its VRP® (Variable Refrigerant Packaged) Heat Pump system.

Unlike other solutions, VRP is not only a heating or cooling unit, but a total HVAC solution that also incorporates patents-pending make-up air and humidity control. Friedrich's VRP system utilizes a Precision Inverter compressor that gives it exceptional performance and reduces sound. It combines variable refrigerant flow, along with the convenience and simplistic design of a closet-mounted single packaged unit. This all-in-one solution offers great advantages for hospitality, multi-family and commercial applications, delivering best-in-class heating and cooling efficiency, easy installation, true humidity control and conditioned fresh air all while maintaining low upfront and operational costs.

Friedrich's VRP system is such a game-changer that it was recently named a 2017 AHR (International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigeration Exposition) Expo Innovation Award finalist in the Indoor Air Quality category. Each year, AHR honors the most innovative and original products, systems and technologies as selected by a panel of third-party judges who evaluate all award entries based on innovative design, creativity, application, value and market impact. Friedrich, along with other award winners, will be recognized during the 2017 AHR Expo, Jan. 30–Feb. 1, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nev.

"The launch of VRP not only represents a major innovation for Friedrich, but for the entire industry. As the first to use variable speed compressor technology in the product category, VRP units have the ability to precisely modulate capacity, versus having to fully turn off and on to maintain a consistent temperature," said TJ Wheeler, Friedrich VP of Marketing and Product Management. "The variable speed nature of the unit also makes VRP extremely efficient and quiet while maximizing comfort and indoor air quality."

Friedrich VRP is so efficient at automatically adjusting capacity to meet specific cooling needs, it delivers efficiencies of up to 20 SEER and 13.0 EER. The variable capacity matches the unit's output to actual demand for increased comfort, lower energy consumption and improved humidity control. VRP also features exceptional low-ambient heat pump operations down to 15 degrees, potentially saving hundreds of dollars per year. Plus, it reaches desired temperatures faster than conventional systems.

When it comes to indoor air quality, Friedrich VRP offers sophisticated humidity control with onboard sensors that adjust and monitor compressor speeds to enhance dehumidification. Friedrich's FreshAire system helps building owners meet ASHRAE 62.1-2013 for conditioned fresh air, bringing in up to 70 CFM of conditioned, MERV 8-filtered outside air, without the cost or complexity associated with large dedicated outside air systems.

Ease of installation is also a major benefit. Because Friedrich VRP units are fully contained with "in closet" design flexibility, it helps keep upfront installed costs low, and offers simple replacement and maintenance advantages.

"VRP offers strong benefits for the industry that until this time, simply couldn't be found in an all-in-one solution," said Wheeler. "We're thrilled to be able to bring this innovation to the market."

September 19, 2016 Friedrich Goes Modular in Major Way with Vert-I-Pak Solution

San Antonio, TX (September 19, 2016) – While modular building and construction have boomed in recent years, the HVAC industry hasn’t always kept step with the needs of commercial modular builders. For sophisticated multi-level modular buildings such as hotels, senior care facilities and multi-family units, traditional HVAC solutions don’t necessarily align with the industry’s demands for efficient, simple and fast.

That’s rapidly changing thanks to Friedrich, a leading U.S.-based manufacturer of air conditioners and other home environment products. Friedrich is putting a major focus on delivering innovative and efficient HVAC solutions specifically designed to meet the needs of modular construction projects.

In particular, Friedrich’s Vert-I-Pak packaged units are increasingly popular with commercial modular builders that require a simple, efficient, self-contained, quiet and streamlined solution. Unlike split systems that involve multiple outdoor condensers, long duct runs and refrigerant lines, or chillers that lead to complicated piping and wiring, Vert-I-Pak provides modular builders with a compact, packaged profile that fits into a closet and can be incorporated into the overall modular manufacturing process. That turns setting the unit into a straightforward process–electrical, drainage and duct connections can be done by a single technician in minutes.

"It’s about as plug and play as you can get," said TJ Wheeler, Vice President of Marketing & Product Management. "Modular builders love it because it saves a tremendous amount of time, requires minimal labor, is completely out of sight and it reduces call-backs. Residents also love the comfort and convenience it offers because it’s quiet and efficient."

Vert-I-Pak right at home in high-end modular senior apartment project

High-end modular commercial projects that have turned to Friedrich’s Vert-I-Pak units include Magnolia by the Lake, a 125-unit senior-living modular apartment residence in Kegoo Harbor, Mich. Champion Commercial Structures, the modular builder responsible for the project, incorporates Friedrich’s Vert-I-Pak units right into its own manufacturing process. The units ship in place, saving installation time onsite and since Vert-I-Pak is out of sight, it doesn’t interfere with the beautiful architecture and design of the project.

"For Champion, Friedrich provided the upfront installation assistance and the back-end warranty support that will assure superior interior climate comfort for years to come," said Steve Snyder of Champion Commercial Structures.

Because modular building and efficiency also go hand-in-hand, the independent metering that Vert-I-Pak allows for is important for multi-tenant applications, eliminating the burden of prorating electric costs for heating and cooling. And unlike central systems, there’s less risk that an entire building becomes uninhabitable if the system needs to be repaired or replaced.

Friedrich Vert-I-Pak units also prove that power can come in a small package. Size varies based on capacity, but units as small as 23 inches wide and deep are available. Larger units, such as 1.5 ton sizes, are a minimum of 32 inches high and 2-ton units are just 47 inches high. AHRI-certified models are available with cooling capacities ranging from a nominal 9,000 BTU to 24,000 BTU. Electric heating is typically included.

"Innovative modular building projects require innovative solutions. Our Vert-I-Pak systems solve many of the challenges commercial modular builders face today while ensuring satisfied, happy tenants tomorrow," said Wheeler.

June 14, 2016 With Interest in Ductless Systems Rising, Friedrich Forecasts Major Changes in How Homeowners Beat the Heat This Summer

San Antonio, Texas (June 14, 2016) – Summer officially begins June 20, and this year, it also may mark a time when the U.S. love affair with central air conditioning starts to cool off.

According to Friedrich, a leading U.S. based air conditioning manufacturer, the hot trend for summer of 2016 is a rising consumer interest for more precise and efficient air conditioning. That includes a bigger demand for ductless air conditioning systems. Unlike central A/C, ductless systems work by cooling only the rooms in use, not those that aren’t. Because they offer the advantage of being extremely quiet, sleek and energy efficient, more homeowners are opting for ductless for its ability to cool rooms faster, maintain a more accurate temperature and reduce energy costs. Friedrich Ductless Systems also use inverter technology to better maintain desired temperature more effectively.

“The problem with central air conditioning is that it’s basically all or nothing,” said TJ Wheeler, Friedrich VP of Marketing and Product Management. “That’s inefficient for how most families live. Ductless systems allow homeowners to customize their cooling needs, focusing on certain rooms or zones of their home they use most and tailored to the comfort level of individual family members.”

Ductless systems come in a range of sizes and capacities. Friedrich offers ductless systems for as many as up to eight rooms on one system and homeowners can choose from single-zone cooling models, single-zone heat pumps that cool and heat, and multi-zone heat pumps that cool and heat multiple rooms. Options include wall mounted units, slim ceiling cassettes and concealed duct units. Costs for ductless systems are comparable to installing central air, but long-term saving potential is greater due to increased efficiency. Because there is no ductwork required, efficiency is also gained by not losing up to an estimated 40 percent of conditioned air through leaky, dirty ducts, also resulting in fresher air.

Ductless air conditioning systems work via a condensing unit with the compressor installed outside the home, and indoor units that contain a fan in the area to be cooled. Refrigerant lines connect the units through walls and electricity is supplied by the outdoor unit, so no additional wiring is needed in rooms where units are installed.

To gear up for the predicted growth and popularity of ductless systems, Friedrich has made an aggressive effort to conduct contractor trainings through the company’s Advantage program, and has trained over 1,000 contractors throughout the country on ductless system technology and installation methods this year.

START OF SUMMER 2016: KEEPING YOUR COOL TIPS SHEET FROM FRIEDRICH

No matter what your summer cooling solution, Friedrich offers six simple tips for how to help beat the heat this season:

  1. GET WITH THE PROGRAM
Install a programmable thermostat. Setting higher temperatures for the hours when you’re not home can dramatically cut your costs. Set properly, a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 per year.
  2. SAVE BY DEGREES
Remember every degree matters. Raising the temperature on your thermostat by just 1 or 2 degrees can make a big impact on your cooling bills. You’ll save 5–7% on cooling costs for every degree above 72ºF that you set your thermostat.
  3. BLOCK IT OUT
Close the shades and drapes. Keeping the sun out can reduce the temperature inside your home by several degrees.
  4. MAKE IT A BREEZE
Use the unit’s fan settings wisely. When it’s humid, keep the unit’s fan running, even if the air conditioner is off. It will circulate the air and keep you more comfortable. Ceiling fans are also a big help, but remember, fans cool people, not rooms. Don’t waste energy running them if you’re not in the room.
  5. KEEP IT TIGHT
Close any gaps or leaks. Don’t lose cold air to gaps around your window frames and doors. Caulk outside around windows and use weather-stripping indoors to seal in the cold air.
  6. PRACTICE SEASONAL CLEANING
Regularly clean your filter. The official beginning of each season is a great time to set a reminder to check, clean and replace your filters if needed. This helps your unit perform optimally, which saves you money while keeping your home fresher.

May 04, 2016 In a New York State of Mind, Friedrich Introduces an Updated, More Stylish Air Conditioning Solution

San Antonio, Texas (May 4, 2016) – In New York and other east coast cities, many residents who live in historic buildings or high-rise apartments must contend with a hole in their lives: a 27-inch exterior wall opening sleeve that requires the right sized air conditioning unit, to be exact.

As the only through-the-wall air conditioner manufacturer to make a unit designed to fit perfectly into a 27-inch sleeve, Friedrich has rolled out some stylish updates for its popular WallMaster® series.

New WallMaster design features include adjustable louvers to help direct air where it is needed, a stylish, gently curved solid front that better blends with a home’s interior architecture and an updated control panel. Beloved by homeowners for its powerful, quiet and efficient operation, WallMaster is also safe and more secure, with EntryGard anti-intrusion protection, an added insect barrier and a prefixed gasket that seals itself for a perfect fit. It also can help save money; Friedrich offers ENERGY STAR® qualified models and all WallMaster units come with Friedrich’s exclusive Money Saver setting cycles.

“It’s amazingly powerful and looks great. But the biggest benefit is that it is essentially plug and play; no need for retrofitting or trim kits,” said TJ Wheeler, Friedrich VP of Marketing and Product Management. “WallMaster solves a major issue for a lot of homeowners looking for the right-sized air conditioning unit for their home.”

New York and other east coast homeowners have been dealing with troublesome sleeve openings for years. Friedrich experts say they’ve seen everything including desperate homeowners who try to fill the gap by stuffing things like socks and newspapers between ill-fitting units and sleeves. That’s due to the fact that no other manufacturer offers a perfectly sized 27” unit to solve these issues; most just sell trim kits and other less than ideal solutions to cover up the problem. The wrong sized unit can also be noisier and may allow pests and drafts to seep in. Friedrich is the only manufacturer to offer a perfect fit for the more than 2 million sleeves made by the now defunct Fedders company.

“Our WallMaster line is custom-designed for New York and east coast homeowners who specifically need help solving this issue in their home. We don’t simply retrofit or offer add on accessories to standard sized models; WallMaster is designed exclusively with these homeowners in mind,” said Wheeler.

Friedrich WallMaster products can be found at major local retailers and through qualified dealers and distributors in the region. For more information, visit www.friedrich.com

May 04, 2016 Experts Predict High Demand for Hottest Products in Cooling this Summer

With rising temperatures throughout the U.S., Friedrich offers more options than ever For homeowners to keep cool

San Antonio, Texas (May 4, 2016) – Perhaps no one tracks seasonal weather trends as closely as Friedrich, a leading U.S. air conditioning manufacturer with a 133-year history. With a long, hot summer predicted for much of the country this year, Friedrich experts say there’s no time like the present to get ready for the season and learn about the latest cooling innovations on the market.

“Depending on budget, needs and priorities, there are some great options available,” said TJ Wheeler, Friedrich VP of Marketing and Product Management. “Homeowners have more choices than ever when it comes to finding the right solution that may work best for them.”

Summer 2016 may be a warm one over much of the U.S. as a transition into La Nina conditions are expected according to a recent report released by The Weather Company's Professional Division. Depending on homeowners’ priorities for keeping cool this year, here’s a round-up of the latest products and technology options Friedrich predicts will be among the most popular for the coming season:

For the ultimate in flexibility: Friedrich Ductless Systems

An alternative for central air, ductless system technology has been around for years in places like Europe, but there is growing interest in the U.S.–and for good reason. That’s because unlike central air conditioning, ductless systems deliver room-by-room comfort where homeowners need it most, versus imprecise whole house cooling. They also are quiet, maintain a more consistent temperature setting and achieve some of the highest energy efficiencies in the industry.

And no more family battles over what temperature to set the main thermostat at, since family members can control the temperature in their personal space and adjust it to their own individual comfort level. Friedrich offers ductless systems for as many as up to eight rooms on one system. Homeowners are also realizing that they can be a highly effective solution for particular problem areas that are hard to keep cool.

“A lot of homeowners have that one room or area in the home where a ducted central AC unit simply doesn’t do the job–be it an attic or a bonus room,” said Wheeler. “Ductless systems are a great solution for those spaces.”

Friedrich offers cool only, as well as heat pump ductless systems, and options include wall mounted units, slim ceiling cassettes and concealed duct units. Realizing that U.S. adoption of ductless systems requires having more HVAC providers and contractors skilled at installation, Friedrich is making an aggressive effort to conduct in-person trainings through the company’s Advantage program, and its goal is to train more than 1,000 contractors throughout the country on ductless system technology this year.

For maximizing design appeal: Friedrich Kühl

Available for both residential and commercial, Friedrich Kühl very well may be the coolest-looking window air conditioner unit on the market today, given its design aesthetics that many owners may want to highlight rather than hide. It’s also a quiet, efficient and reliable powerhouse, with the largest Kühl unit producing up to 36,000 BTUs and ENERGY STAR® qualified models are available. Kühl’s sleek, state-of-the-art design can be accentuated with Friedrich’s custom color options that bring to mind stylish race cars versus room air conditioners, including deep red, sophisticated black, sky blue and even cheerful pink.

For the environmentally minded: Friedrich Chill and Uni-Fit with R32 technology

Friedrich is once again innovating the air cooling market with a variety of solutions that are not only energy efficient and meet 2016 ENERGY STAR-qualified standards, but also address other environmental issues. Friedrich is one of the first air conditioning manufacturers in the U.S. to use R32, a next generation refrigerant that doesn’t harm the ozone layer with both low Global Warming Potential (LGWP) and low Life Cycle Climate Performance (LCCP). Added benefits of R32 include increased efficiency and less refrigerant volume needed, meaning air conditioners with R32 are able to use even less power and chemical refrigerant to achieve the same cooling levels. For 2016, six models in Friedrich’s Chill line and five models in the Uni-Fit line will use R32 technology.

For those who need a perfect fit: Friedrich WallMaster

Many residents who live in historic buildings or high-rise apartments must contend with a hole in their lives: a 27-inch exterior wall opening sleeve that requires the right sized air conditioning unit, to be exact.

For almost 30 years, Friedrich is the only wall air conditioner manufacturer that makes a 27-inch WallMaster unit designed to fit perfectly in a 27-inch sleeve. WallMaster offers updated, stylish design features including adjustable louvers to help direct air where it is needed, and delivers powerful, quiet and efficient operation. It’s also safer and more secure, with EntryGard anti-intrusion protection and an added insect barrier.

“It’s amazingly powerful and looks great. But the biggest benefit is that it is essentially plug and play; no need for retrofitting or trim kits,” said Wheeler. “WallMaster solves a major issue for a lot of homeowners looking for the right sized air conditioning unit for their home.”

May 04, 2016 Friedrich Introduces First Room Air Conditioners with Zero Ozone Depletion and Lowest Global Warming Potential to U.S. Market

San Antonio, Texas (May 4, 2016) – This summer, Friedrich, a leading air conditioning manufacturer, is making it easier than ever to keep cool all while combating climate change.

The company is the first in the U.S. to unveil room air conditioners for residential and light commercial customers that utilize a more environmentally sustainable refrigerant called R32. Benefits of R32 include significantly reduced global warming potential (GWP) and zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). R32 also helps increase energy efficiency.

Six window room air conditioner models in Friedrich’s Chill® line and five through-the-wall air conditioner models in Friedrich’s Uni-Fit® line using R32 are now available, and meet the most recent ENERGY STAR-qualified standards.

Friedrich is ahead of the curve in the use of R32 as today, most room air conditioners use a refrigerant known at R410A, a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC). R32 has just one-third of the GWP of R410A. Other advantages include higher operating efficiencies, meaning units that use R32 refrigerant consume less power as compared to similar units with R410A. Also, units utilizing R32 require significantly less refrigerant volume in the system, reducing the total amount of refrigerant needed–another strong environmental advantage.

While new to the U.S., globally, R32 has been used for more than ten years in countries throughout Europe and other parts of the world. It is estimated that more than ten million air conditioners using R32 have been sold to date. In preparing for greater adoption, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) have created a new subclass to technically classify the very low degree of flammability risk associated with the use of R32 in air conditioning applications.

Known for innovation and rigorous testing, including an extensive onsite lab facility where product research, performance, stress and safety measurements are done, Friedrich has conducted additional R32 tests for the last few years and is confident that the U.S. market is ready for a more sustainable solution.

“This is a major advancement when it comes to offering a more energy-efficient, environmentally responsible air conditioning choice,” said TJ Wheeler, VP Marketing and Product Management for Friedrich. “We are excited to be able to give customers a great option that also delivers exceptional performance.”

Friedrich products, including Chill and Uni-Fit lines, can be purchased via qualified dealers and distributors throughout the U.S. For more information, visit www.friedrich.com
